Prior to joining Eversheds Sutherland in April 2024 Barney was a partner at DLA Piper, where he trained and qualified as a solicitor in 2006.

Barney has acted for many of the UK’s leading financial institutions and restructuring professionals since qualifying as a restructuring lawyer in 2006, including:
- advising the administrators of British Home Stores on the sale of the brand and wind down of the UK store portfolio
- acting for a UK bank in connection with the sale of a portfolio of commercial property loans in substantial default
- advising the administrators of companies within the Opal Property Group on the sale of 8 student properties for £245 million
- advising a UK bank in connection with the financial restructuring and subsequent sale a listed global technology business with in excess of £50 million secured on assets in 8 different jurisdictions
- advising the directors of Beales department stores in connection with an accelerated marketing process, before then advising the appointed administrators in connection with trading and wind down of the stores
