We act as the pro bono legal advisor of The Professional Makeup Artists of Finland in negotiations concerning the paying of copyright remunerations for makeup design in audiovisual productions. Copyright remunerations for TV and film productions are paid out by the collective rights management agency Kopiosto ry.
The negotiations with Kopiosto ry’s member organisations, having taken place in late 2024 and 2025, have progressed to a pilot phase. The aim of the pilot is to acquire more data on makeup design in Finnish TV and film productions, in order to better assess the nature of these creative processes as copyrightable works under Finnish and European law, and thus their eligibility for copyright remunerations.
The case is particularly noteworthy in both the Finnish and European context, as there are no legal precedents under Finnish or EU law on the copyrightability of makeup design.
“It is a joy and a privilege to be advising our client pro bono in a case that is particularly relevant for one of the most diverse and visible parts of the Finnish cultural and creative landscape. The Nordic collective licensing model for copyright is also globally unique, making this a particularly exciting case. The case is also legally challenging and interesting in the sense that many creative fields are currently in flux.”
